It All Began In A Rural Village

The Problem Statement
Enayam Puthenthurai is a coastal village in Kanyakumari District Tamilnadu, India. People who were born here 25 years ago could have seen a clean seashore they long to see now. Before the entry of plastic, people used to put their food waste at the sea and it became food to the fish there.
When plastic entered the day to day life of this fishermen community, they began to practice the same sea dumping method as done before.
After nearly 18 years of putting plastic waste, the sea shore and sea have been full of plastic and non-biodegradable litters. Every 5m distance in the sea we can witness a piece of plastic. It means more than a million tons of plastic have already entered our costal bed.
The Solution Journey
With the long-term vision not to let any plastic remains entering the coastal bed, we created an organization named ‘I Clean My Village’ (ICMV). The Founder Shaju Prakash with his brother Arun Amuthan and Father Jacob gathered some college students and began training the local people in sustainable source segregation.
We identified 400 houses for the pilot project. The ICMV Volunteers went to each household every day and collected the might-be-sea-dumped waste into 6 categories separately.
The pilot project was a huge success as those 400 houses were 98% sucessfully source segregated the waste for 6 months. People could visibly witness the drastic change at the sea shore and sea.
With 400 houses for six months, we processed around 80000 kgs/80 tons of wet and dry waste, which could have otherwise landed at the sea.
